Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji,” meaning yoke or union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body. It incorporates breathing exercises, meditation and poses designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress. Yoga is known for its ability to ease stress and promote relaxation and can often have a positive effect on sleep patterns as well as general aches and pains. During the yoga class, there is a focus on being present in the moment and finding a sense of peace, which can really help students who experience feelings of anxiety and stress. This is very probably a familiar feeling to many of us at this strange and uncertain time.
Our yoga classes at Delta are small, supportive and friendly. There is a real sense of community that is built up over several weeks of practising and relaxing together. I am really pleased that we are able to continue our yoga classes via live streaming on Zoom. One of the biggest benefits of continuing our Yoga practice at this particular time is the sense of togetherness and support that is experienced by students. We may not be physically together in the studio but on the screen we can see each other, say ‘hello’ and there is a real sense that we are still connected in hearts and minds. That can feel very comforting at a time of social distancing which can result in people feeling disconnected and lonely.
I teach a gentle Hatha style of yoga with a focus on connecting the breath and movements. The class is suitable for all, including beginners. Stretch and relax the body, calm and quiet the mind. Beautiful!
